Director of Product Design - Remote

Formative is starting to scale up its design team responsible for bringing awesome software to teachers, and is looking to hire a Full Time Director of Product Design to spearhead the department.

Who is Formative?

Our Co-Founder/CEO, Craig Jones, was a middle school science teacher at a struggling public school in South Los Angeles. Thanks to a school grant, he was able to work with a class set of used laptops every day. Initially, Craig patched together some basic software, a student response system, and a lot of spreadsheets to help understand his students' strengths and weaknesses to learning standards. The technique of daily formative assessment, more targeted intervention, and faster feedback ultimately led to record-breaking academic outcomes. After four years in the classroom, Craig went to grad school at UCLA where he met Kevin McFarland, his roommate, and soon-to-be co-founder. Together, Kevin and Craig envisioned a world where faster formative teaching practices could replace traditional end-of-year summative assessments. After multiple research initiatives, prototypes, and the help of countless individuals, Formative ( was launched in January 2015.

Picture yourself working directly with the Founders, Sales, engineering, and our amazing Customer Success team to make life easier on educators all over the world.

Since this is an early hire on the design team, we are looking for a generalist with proven leadership skills. We are seeking someone who is strategic (helps shape the big picture) but is also a hands-on design practitioner. The ideal candidate will guide our millions of teachers and students through an experience crafted by research, analytics, and the latest principles of UX and product design. We are seeking an expert with the skills to evolve the existing product to be even more simple, powerful, and visually appealing.

What will be some of your core responsibilities for the first year?

  • Partner with two founders to shape product strategy. Help prioritize the Roadmap of strategic projects and tactical enhancements that the engineering team will bring to life.
  • Create a scalable design system of reusable components and usage guidelines. Research and suggest the best technical solution to house this resource.
  • Collect and digest feedback from a variety of sources (e.g., teacher feedback forums, Sales, Customer Success) and use it to inform the Roadmap. Prioritize bugs and feature requests.
  • Help new teachers on the platform get up to speed quickly with a rapid onboarding program that you will improve.
  • Partner with engineering to implement analytics to gather data on how teachers are using the platform. Track and report on key impact metrics around engagement, retention, and satisfaction.
  • Provide guidance on content and help shape our company “voice.” Avoid jargon and make the platform feels welcoming to teachers across the country.
  • You will hire and train other designers.

  • Exhibit design breadth: journey maps, sketching, lo-fi wireframes, interaction design, layouts, navigation, iconography, pixel-perfect details
  • Be well-versed in responsive web design
  • Meet challenges with energetic optimism
  • Have examples of challenges and successes while delivering design excellence
  • A proven builder of diverse, inclusive, and high-performance teams
  • Strong written communication skills for team and external communication: web copy, collateral, and internal documentation


Nice to haves:

  • Experience as a teacher or in an EdTech
  • Experience at growth-stage startups
  • Experience with front-end coding (Note: our front-end is React.)
  • Experience with Figma and building clickable prototypes
